Tamiya Centurion British Main Battle Tank

Rating: recommended if you want a plastic Centurion

This is a good news/bad news proposition.  Bad news is that Academy has canceled their Israeli Centurion, good news is a Canadian company has reissued Academy's old copy of Tamiya's Centurion III kit. Tamiya's Centurion was one of their motorized kits from the late 1960's, which had passed from the scene over a decade ago. Academy released a clone of it in the early 1990s copyright laws in Asia being a little more open to interpretation. This is Academy's kit even down to the mold marks on the sprue. The instructions are new and so are the decals.  That is the nicest part of the kit. The markings are nicely done; featuring an Israeli vehicle, and markings for five other vehicles never offered in the previous releases of this kit.  One is a different British vehicle from Korea, three Canadian tanks and an Australian Mark V from Vietnam.

On the down side the actual plastic is crude.  It is Tamiya from the mid-1960s.  Big motorization holes mar the underside the sponsons are wide open (but covered by the Centurion's big sideskirts) and the tracks have detail on only one side.  However, it is the only kit in plastic of the Centurion.  Accurate Armour has promised more in resin, but I don't like resin and can't afford it.  Honestly, $135 for resin versus $19.95?  For the cost of Accurate Armor's Centurion I can have two platoons (that's 6 to you nontankies) of this kit!   Maybe, just maybe, if we all say our prayers Tamiya will come to their senses and re-engineer their beautiful 1/25 Centurion into 1/35th scale.  Until then, I'll build this kit and enjoy bringing it up to current kit standards with a little hard work.
