September 2006

Ah, September.   The summer is un-officially over, the kids go back to school and the Garwood Fire Department goes on alert to respond to the annual NJ/IPMS barbeque!   With Charlie Marrero busy running his own business, Martin Quinn handled the grilling duties.   The menu consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, bratwurst and potato salad.   The potato salad was courtesy of outgoing 1st Vice President Stan Stancewicz, while the brats were brought by the
incoming 1st Vice President, Tom Stead.

Yes, the big news - other than the surprisingly low turnout for free food - was that  NJ/IPMS has a new President.  Tom Vandermark is able to retire as President, and will be replaced by long-time member Dave Schwartz.    As previously mentioned, Stan is being replaced as 1st VP by Tom Stead.  So all of you who didn't come to the meeting because you didn't want to be nominated, it is now safe to come back to the club!

Thank you Tom and Stan for three great years of hard work and outstanding leadership.    Good luck to Dave and Tom as they guide the club into the future!  Tom now happily joins the "ex-President's club" along with Bill Schwarz, Bob LaPadura and Bill Connolly.

Meanwhile, there was another special contest this month:  Empire Night.   The theme had to do with anything that related to the British Empire.    While the aircraft turnout was very good, the turnout for the Land/Sea contest was light.  Therefore, the sponsor of the contest stretched the rules a little bit to also include items that belonged to allies of the British Empire.    Congratulation to Mike Terre and Tom Vandermark, who won the Air and Land/Sea awards, respectively.
